Stena Vessel – Cargo Tank Coating

Project Overview

The Stena Vessel, a chemical and oil products tanker designed for high-flexibility liquid cargo transport, required full cargo tank rehabilitation due to corrosion and operational performance requirements.

The vessel was mobilized to DP World Dry Docks, Dubai for complete surface preparation and application of the Marineline® 784 Advanced Polymer Coating system.

The project involved high-specification abrasive blasting and a controlled two-coat polymer coating application in full compliance with manufacturer and marine industry standards.

Scope of work

  • Abrasive blasting to ISO 8501-1 Sa 2.5
  • Full surface preparation of cargo tank interiors
  • Two-coat application of Marineline® 784 Advanced Polymer Coating
  • Airless spray application with stripe coating on welds and joints
  • Environmental monitoring and controlled execution

Challenges & Solutions

Challenge:
Marineline® 784’s high-solids formulation created risk of irreversible dry spray defects.

Solution:
A staged coating methodology was implemented, with full surface protection and sequential exposure of active spray zones. This eliminated dry spray formation and ensured uniform film build across tank surfaces.

Challenge:
Peak summer temperatures risked exceeding allowable surface temperature and dew point limits.

Solution:
Deck areas were fully tarpaulin-covered. Continuous monitoring of surface temperature, humidity, and dew point ensured strict compliance with manufacturer specifications.

Challenge:
Protective plastic coverings flaked during coating, causing contamination.

Solution:
Plastic covers were replaced with multi-ply absorbent paper protection, preventing overspray flaking and eliminating contamination risk.

Challenge:
Lack of tiedown points for securing protective covers inside cargo holds.

Solution:
Specialized magnetic hooks were engineered as temporary tiedown anchors, ensuring full coverage protection and zero inclusions during application.

Results & Outcome

Successfully completed the full two-coat application of Marineline® 784 in accordance with client and marine coating standards.

  • Uniform dry film thickness across all cargo tanks
  • Zero post-cure dry spray defects
  • Controlled environmental execution during peak summer
  • Minimal rework and on-time completion
  • Full QA/QC documentation approved without major non-conformity
